Teen depression is a serious medical problem. It causes a continuous feeling of sadness and the teen loses interest in activities they use to love. Depression in teens affects how they think, feel, and behave. It could also cause emotional, functional and physical problems. Even though people think depression in teens and adults are similar, the symptoms can be different between the two. The symptoms for behavioral changes can be tiredness, loss of energy, sleeping too much, changes in appetite, the use of alcohol or drugs, feeling agitated or restless, finding yourself thinking slower, or have slower speaking and body movements. You will also experience constant body aches and headaches. The teen will also perform poorly in school or miss a lot of school. The teen might also neglect their appearance, which means they will dress sloppily, not appreciate how they look, and try to hide themselves. Some teens will have disruptive or risky behavior, they will also harm themselves by cutting, burning, or getting a lot of piercings or tattoos. There are many causes of teen depression. One of the causes is biological chemistry, which is when the neurotransmitters are out of balance. Hormones can cause it, because the teen will be going through puberty where their hormones are all over the place and their body is changing, so this can be a very confusing time for the teen. Another cause can be that they inherited traits from family members that have had depression. Also the teen could have experienced early childhood trauma, physical and/or sexual abuse, the death of a loved one, or many other reasons. One last cause can be that the teen learned patterns of negative thinking, which can mean he or she has learned the feeling of helplessness from seeing others feeling this way or having their family neglect them. To diagnose depression, a doctor would do a few different tests. One of them is a physical exam. This will involve in depth questions about your health to help determine what could be causing the teen's depression. Another test could be a lab test, which might include a blood test or seeing if the thyroid is functioning correctly. One more test a doctor can do is a psychological evaluation where they will discuss with you any thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that you have that could relate to your depression. After the test, they will determine if you do have depression and the severity or type of depression you have. After this, the next step would then be the development of a treatment plan. There are many types of treatments for teen depression. Sometimes a doctor will prescribe medication, although most of the time the teen will not receive medication and will just see a psychiatrist, psychologist, or a mental health counselor. Also, everyone is different so finding the right treatment will require some patience, especially since some medications need eight weeks or longer to work completely. Once you started your treatment you must stick to it, which means going to every appointment even if you don't want to. Also, it is very important to take your medication as prescribed. It might help if you learn about your depression, that way you can understand a little more about what is happening. One more important thing to do is to stay away from alcohol and drugs. At the time you are taking them it could seem like your lessening the symptoms of your depression, but in the long run it will make the symptoms worse, which will also make it harder to treat. So basically stick to healthy habits, which could be physical activity or sleeping well. There are several things you can do to help cope with depression. The first is to make and keep friends, and to have a positive relationship with others, which can help boost your self-confidence. Also, stay physically active which could mean participating in sports, clubs, or get a job. You should also never be afraid to ask for help or talk to someone if you're having a rough day and are feeling overwhelmed. It might also help to talk to other teens your age that are also going through what you are going through. So, go to a local support group and learn some new skills to help you face everyday challenges. So overall to help prevent teen depression there are a few things you can do. You can take steps to help control your stress levels. One way to do this is to not commit to too many plans or activities at once. Another way is too boost any low self-esteem you might have by getting involved with school, friends, or clubs. Also, reach out to your friends and family, and attend support groups. It is also good to get treatment as early as possible to prevent your depression from getting worse, and then continue to stay on your treatments plan. These few steps will help a lot in the end, if you stick to them.
